Sunday was a great local food day at Geezer Farm. I decided to invite folks over to pick what they wanted before we had single-digit temperatures last night. I was worried the cold would kill off some of the vegetables and I didn’t want them to go to waste.
Yesterday during my first ever pickathon, friend and customer Danielle David Larose brought her kids over (except the baby, who was home napping) to pick their favorite greens from the hoophouse.
Danielle and Jason’s crew were so enthusiastic selecting their favorite vegetables. The way I see Danielle and Jason exposing their kids to where their food comes from fits in perfectly with my vision of Geezer Farm. I want to develop a relationship with the people who eat my food, and have them learn what goes into growing the food. This will help them be better eaters, and in turn better stewards of our environment.
It was a joy to see the kids and all the folks who came to pick their own vegetables. Even my farmer friend Pat, was enthused and couldn’t wait to pop a hakurei turnip into his mouth. This is a local food system in action.
